ARE YOU 18 OR OLDER: So older
CHARACTER
NAME: Violet Evergarden
CANON: Violet Evergarden
AGE: Approximately 14
CANON POINT: post episode 8.
HISTORY:
A Wiki History which is a linear timeline, specifically of Violet's time in the military.
Entries 3-5 and 7-8 Are, in brief, the larger events of Violet's post war life
PERSONALITY:
Violet has spent her entire life being something other than a person. At the best of times, under the care of Gilbert's older brother, she's been an animal, acting on instinct when she's not being ordered. Most of the time, at the behest of military officers, she's been a tool, a weapon for war to be pointed at one's enemies and let loose to wreak violence. In this new world of peace and thanks to Gilbert who was her soul guardian, she's very suddenly a person, who's meant to understand what that means and what things like having humanity and agency are. Having either of these things is wonderful and painful at the same time. A new world is opening up to her slowly but surely: thoughts and feelings and ideas that she barely has the language to grasp, but she wants to so very much. There is a sense of wonder to her every time she learns something new and she is constantly enchanted by the complexities and the differences in the people she meets. Her life has been centered around a single person for so long, to the exclusion of all others, but now, in searching to understand what that person meant when he told her he loved her, she finds herself drawn to other people and their lives and stories.
At the same time, every new word and thought and feeling uncovers the true horror of what she was, the realization of the things she's done and the lives she's taken that she had been spared in her ignorance. It was something Hodgins told her when she first came to work for him at the post office. "You don't know it, but you're burning with the things you've done." It's only very recently that she's realized what he means. It didn't use to matter that she'd hurt people, it use to mean nothing that every contact she made with another person was to kill. Now that she knows what pain is, not just physical, but emotional, she doesn't want to be the cause of it. Though she still questions if she has any right at all to it, to keep living and to be an Auto Memoir Doll, who's entire occupation is based around bringing people together.
That she even wants something is a huge step for herself. There's only three things that Violet has consciously wanted, that she could put the idea of wanting to: the emerald set broach that reminds her of Gilbert's eyes, to stay by Gilbert's side and to know what he meant when he told her to live, when he told her he loved her. The rest, being a person who wants things, comes in fits and starts. Violet doesn't think much of her own identity. She didn't have an identity for most of her life outside of being Gilbert's "dog" (as his brother called her) and a weapon for war, neither involved or even encouraged any room for thinking of herself. Becoming an Auto Memoir Doll was the first decision about her identity she ever made. She still errs on the side of behaving like a proper soldier, alert, strict and precise in her habits.
She models herself after Gilbert who was himself a career soldier and exemplary officer: somber and straight forward. Violet takes it a step too far, she's too straight forward with very few filters on what should and should not be said. She'd never needed them before when the only person who spoke to her was Gilbert. It might be charming if she delivered it with any sort of inflection, but for the most part, Violet's default setting is muted. At best she comes off as aloof, at worst cold and unkind. She is neither, but she lacks the words and understanding of feelings to actually communicate this clearly. But she knows she doesn't want to cause pain, so her apologies are heartfelt and earnest, if monotone. She goes well out of her way to help once she knows how she can help, regardless of how doing so might effect her personally. She doesn't have a sense of risk or reward, rather she's developing a sense of whether her actions will harm or hurt.
